Facts:
- Opponents argued granting rights of person-hood to a fertilized egg would make abortion a crime and outlaw certain forms of birth control.
- Margaret Sanger operated the first birth control clinic in the U.S.
- The first birth control clinic opened in 1916.
- Sanger came from an Irish, Catholic family; she was one of 11 children
- Sanger helped deliver baby when she was 8 years old; her mother died of tuberculosis.
- During her time, it was illegal to distribute information, mail, or write about contraception.
- Sanger expected to get arrested when she opened her clinic because she was going to give out information about birth control, even though it was illegal.
- 41% of women who received care never used contraceptives; out of these women,an average had at least 1 abortion.
- Sanger was accused of being eugenic.
- Madison Grant and Paul Popenoe were eugenics; they believed the population can improve by only letting the biologically "fit" to reproduce.
